Transit Permit

This Permit is issued to foreigners who being in transit exhaust the ninety (90) days Transit period.

Requirements for Applying for a Transit Permit

  • Covering letter to the Director General of Immigration by host or company
  • Certified copy of current valid passport
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Photocopy of  valid passport
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule

Requirements for Renewal/Extension

  • Certified copy of current valid passport
  • Covering letter by host or company addressed to the Director General of Immigration
  • Certified copy of new passport
  • Copy of original Permit
  • Prescribed Fee as in the schedule below

Study Permit

Study Permit is granted to a foreign national who intends to study at a recognized learning Institution in Zambia.  Recognized learning Institutions are those that are registered with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology

Persons planning to undertake formal studies at registered educational institutions in Zambia should apply for a Student Permit before travel to Zambia.

PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING FOR A STUDY PERMIT

Study permits are issued to Non-Zambians who come to study in Zambia.  Applicants who are not resident in Zambia must submit their applications while outside the country.

Application Steps

  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Certified copy of the current passport
  • Copy of old passport that might have been used by applicant
  • Police clearance from applicant’s country of permanent residence. This applies to applicants  who are applying from outside Zambia and are 18 years and above

 

Supporting Documentation

  • Letter of acceptance from the Institution/school;
  • Status of the host, parent or guardian if any;
  • Chest X-Ray report
  • Write a cover letter to Chief Immigration Officer

Requirements for Applying for Renewal/Extension of Study Permit

  • Cover letter from the host/Institution
  • Copy of original Permit
  • Certified copy of the current passport
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Copy of old passport that might have been used by applicant
  • Latest results transcript / progress report
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule below

Requirements for Application to Change Learning Institution

  • Covering letter from the applicant
  • Acceptance letter from new school
  • Copy of original Permit
  • Certified copy of the current passport
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Copy of old passport that might have been used by applicant
  • Latest results transcript / progress report from previous school
  • Prescribed Fee as in the schedule below

 

Visiting Permit

The Visiting Permit is issued to foreign visitors who intend to ordinarily visit Zambia for a period exceeding ninety days.  The current regulation is that ordinary visitors are entitled to an accumulative ninety (90) days visit within one’s calendar year. After the expiry of the initial free ninety days, if such a person wants to stay longer, they can apply for a visiting permit for a fee which will be valid for an additional ninety day period.  Visitors should note that an application for a visiting permit must be done thirty (30) days before the expiry of the initial ninety days.

PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING FOR A VISITING PERMIT

A visiting permit is issued to private visitors who want to remain in Zambia for a period in excess of ninety days.

Application Steps

  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Certified copy of the current passport
  • Copy of old passport that might have been used by applicant

Gather of supporting documentation including:

  • Certified photocopies of passport
  • Bank guarantee/return air ticket
  • Letter from the host in Zambia

 

APPLYING FOR RENEWAL/EXTENSION OF VISITORS PERMIT

Requirements

  • Covering letters from host in Zambia
  • Copy original Permit
  • Certified copy of the current passport
  • Copy of old passport that might have been used by applicant
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Payment of prescribes fee as in the schedule below

Business Visa

This is a visa that is issued to an individual who is coming to Zambia for business for a period of not more than 30 days “BV30D”.

Requirements for granting of a Business Visa

  • The original passport
  • Applicant must be coming to Zambia for a Business
  • Gotten only at a port of entry – border or airport
  • Issued free of charge by the Immigration Department
  • Valid only for 30 Business Days

Investors’ Permit

An Investor’s Permit is issued to a foreigner intending to establish a business or invest in Zambia or who has established or invested in a business in Zambia. The Permit allows the holder and his/her spouse and minor children to enter and re-enter into and to remain within Zambia until it expires.

Requirements for Issuance of Investor’s Permit

  • Covering letter addressed to the Director General of Immigration
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Certificate of Share Capital (where required)
  • Certificate of Minimum Capital
  • Investment license from ZDA (not mandatory)
  • List of Directors
  • Proof of personal investment (Bank Statement, Money transfer, ZRA Form CE20, Bill of Lading from ZRA). If an investor is forming his own company, he or she should bring in at least US$250,000. If he/she is joining an existing company, it should be at least US$150,000.
  • Proof of ownership or lease agreement in Zambia
  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & last endorsement stamp for Zambia)
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule below

 

Requirements for Renewal/Extension

  • Covering letter to the Director General
  • Copy of original permit
  • Inspection Report by Immigration
  • VAT/ZRA receipts
  • Audit Report from a recognized firm registered with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)
  • Lease Agreement (where applicable)
  • Current bank statement
  • Certified copy of current passport
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule below

 

Requirements for variation by change of Nature of Business/Addition of Nature of Business

  • Covering letter to the Director General
  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & most recent Zambian Immigration stamps showing current status of applicant)
  • Copy of original permit
  • Certified copies of certificate of incorporation
  • Appropriate license
  • List of directors
  • List of share capital
  • Certificate of registration of business name (where applicable)
  • Investment license (if any)
  • Proof of ownership of land or lease agreement (where applicable)
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule below

Requirements for variation by Addition of Children and/or Spouse

  • Covering letter to the Director General from the applicant
  • Original Permit
  • Certified copies of marriage/birth certificate/s (as appropriate)
  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & most recent Zambian Immigration stamps showing current status of applicant)
  • Recent passport size photograph/s for applicant/s
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule

 

Residence Permit

This Permit confers permanent residence to the holder and is issued to: persons who have been ordinarily and lawfully residents in Zambia; Children of Residence permit holders and Zambians; Holders of Employment or Investor’s Permits for at Least 10 and 3 years respectively; Holders of Spouse Permits for at least five (5) years; and Retirees.

Requirements for Applying for a Residence Permit

Applicants aged between 7 – 15 years:

  • Covering letter to Director General of Immigration
  • Certified photocopy of the applicant’s valid passport
  • Certified copy of birth certificate of the applicant
  • Certified copy of parents’ status
  • Copy of original Permit (where applicable)
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Adoption certificate (in case of adopted children)
  • Proof of enrollment at an educational Institution (for students)
  • Payment of prescribed fee as in the schedule below

 

Applicants above 16 years:

  • Covering letter to Director General of Immigration
  • Certified copy of Aliens’ Registration Card
  • Certified copy of birth certificate of the applicant
  • Certified copy of marriage certificate for a spouse
  • Two testimonials as to the character from persons of good standing who have known the applicant for a minimum period of not less than three (3) years
  • Certified photocopy of the applicant’s valid passport
  • Certified copy of host’s status
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Surrender of Original Permit (where applicable)
  • Adoption certificate (in case of adopted children)
  • Proof of enrollment at an educational Institution (for students)
  • Payment of prescribed fee as in the schedule below

 

Retirees:

  • Covering letter to Director General of Immigration
  • Proof of funds (bank statement)
  • Proof of permanent pension (irrevocable annuity) or retirement account
  • Proof of ownership of land or lease agreement (where applicable)
  • Certified photocopies of current passport
  • Copies of pages of the old passport used by applicant where available
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Payment of prescribed fee as on the schedule below

 

Variation of Residence Permit (Change of Employer)

  • Certified copy of original Permit
  • Certified photocopies of current passport
  • submission of professional certificates
  • letter of release from previous employer
  • letter of offer from the prospective employer
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule above

 

Variation of Residence Permit (Inclusion of a new business and change of company)

  • Certified photocopies of current passport
  • Certified copy of original Permit
  • Copy of certificate of incorporation,
  • List of Directors and original entry permit.
  • Latest Bank Statement
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule above

  • Copies of pages of the old passport used by applicant where available
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Contract of employment
  • Certified Documentary proof of professional or other qualification
  • Payment of prescribed fee as in the schedule

 

Spouse Permit

Requirements for Applying for a Spouse Permit

  • Certified Photocopy of current passport – first biodata page and the page showing applicant’s current status in Zambia
  • Recent passport size photograph for spouse applying for the permit
  • Statutory Marriage Certificate copy
  • Letter of consent from the Spouse
  • Status of the Spouse – permit copy for non-Zambians and NRC copy for Zambians
  • Proof of sustenance
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule below

Requirements for Renewal/Extension

  • Covering letter from the applicant addressed to the Director General of Immigration
  • Letter of consent from the spouse in support of the application (citizen, established resident & Residence permit holder)
  • Copies of the pages of the original Permit – these are all pages that have been written on by the Department of Immigration
  • Certified copy of current passport – first biodata page and the page showing applicant’s current status in Zambia
  • Copies of old passport applicant might have used before the current passport
  • Recent passport size photograph for spouse applying for the permit
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule below

Temporary Permit

This Permit is issued to a Prohibited Immigrant to make his stay in Zambia lawful.

Requirements for Applying for Temporary Permit

  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & endorsement showing current status of applicant in Zambia
  • Certified copies of the permit on which applicant might have been while in Zambia
  • Cover letter to the Director General of Immigration giving reasons for this application
  • Recent certified passport size photograph
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule below.

Requirements for Renewal/Extension of Temporary Permit

  • Covering letter giving reasons why an extension is desired
  • Copies of the pages of the original Permit – these are all pages that have been written on by the Department of Immigration
  • Recent certified passport size photograph
  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & endorsement showing current status of applicant in Zambia
  • Copies of any other important document supporting the application
  • Payment of a prescribed fee as in the schedule below

Temporary Employment Permit

This Permit is issued to any business visitor intending to remain in Zambia for a period exceeding thirty (30) days. The period granted shall not exceed six (6)months in any period of  twelve(12) months.

Requirements for Temporary Employment Permit Issuance

  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & endorsement stamps (BVD – “Business Visit 30 Days”) for Zambia
  • Covering letter to the Director – General of Immigration from the employer indicating the nature of work the applicant intends to undertake in Zambia
  • Copies of professional qualifications
  • CV
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule of fee as on the schedule below

 

Requirements for Temporary Employment Permit Renewal/Extension

  • Covering letter from the employer indicating the reasons for extension
  • Certified copy of valid Passport (bio data & endorsement showing current status of applicant in Zambia
  • Copies of the pages of the original Permit – these are all pages that have been written on by the Department of Immigration
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Prescribed fee as in the schedule of fee as on the schedule below
